The Remarkable Journey
Foundation and Inception (The Glorious Past)
The story of the School of Preaching and indeed the NCI is one rooted in dedication, vision, and collaboration. In December 1979, Brother Okon E Mkpong, who later became the pioneer president of the NCI, initiated a visionary program of preacher training. The six-month course unfolded four days a week at Ikot Akpan Ike in the then Eastern Nsit, with notable contributors such as David Anako, A. U. Ituen, E. A. Ufot, E. A. Eshiet, and E. J. Akpan, all generously offering their teachings without compensation.
Upon learning of this impactful initiative, Brother F. F. Carson, recognizing the potential for positive change, promptly provided Bibles and materials to be distributed at the course’s conclusion in 1980. The success of the 1979 effort led to a resounding call for another course in 1980, this time held at Ikot Osom in Etinan, attracting participants from diverse backgrounds, including professionals and businesspeople. The South-side church of Christ, inspired by the program’s impact, sent representatives, Brothers Marvin Jones and Hubert Brown, from the United States to bear witness to this transformative journey.
In 1981, Brother Carson received a compelling proposal for the establishment of the School of Preaching in Uyo, following Brother Mkpong’s direction of short courses in 1979 and 1980. Convinced of the need for a more extensive and enduring program, Brother Carson threw his full support behind the proposal, committing financial resources to ensure the availability of qualified Bible teachers. The School of Preaching was officially inaugurated on January 20, 1982, at the church building in Ikot Udoro Oku, Uyo.
Transition and Expansion
Reports of the school’s successful inauguration reached Brother Carson in March 1982, prompting consistent financial support for Bible teachers, a commitment that continued until 1985. When Brother Mkpong resolved to dedicate himself full-time to the School of Preaching, Brother Carson, demonstrating unwavering support, sought additional assistance from other sponsors to ensure the continued success of the program.
In 1986, recognizing the need for a permanent and dedicated space, Brother Mkpong acquired land at Akpa Ube Street, Uyo. Once again, Brother Carson not only endorsed this pivotal step but also provided a substantial donation to initiate the construction of a three-story school building.
Completion and Dedication
Despite the untimely passing of Brother Carson on August 12, 1987, his legacy lived on as the Southside Church of Christ in Richmond, under the leadership of Howard Jack Wooling, assumed responsibility for completing the school building. The three-story structure, a testament to resilience and shared commitment, was successfully completed and dedicated on December 17, 1988. This dedication served as both a tribute to the memory of Brother F. F. Carson and a celebration of the enduring impact of the School of Preaching.
The journey of the School of Preaching is not merely a chronicle of academic growth; it is a testament to the enduring commitment, shared vision, and collaborative efforts of its founders and supporters. Today, the School of Preaching stands tall as a beacon of learning and character development, embodying the enduring legacy of those who envisioned its establishment.
